Chapter 6

It is the end of summer. Dill is leaving soon. But the kids want one last adventure. They plan to peek into the Radley house. They are going to see Boo once and for all.

It’s night. They sneak out. They go to the Radley yard.

They climb onto the porch.

Jem looks into the window. Nothing.

Then they see a shadow. It's a man. The man is looking at them. The kids get scared. They run away. They run away fast.

The children have to crawl under a fence to escape. It is a barbed wire fence.

When Jem is crawling under the fence, his pants get stuck on the fence! He cannot escape! Jem has to take off his pants and leave them. He runs away in his underwear. He is too scared. He is too scared to go back for his pants.

They all run home. Back home, they feel safe. But Jem is worried. His pants are still at the Radleys'. He doesn't want to get in trouble. He decides to go back. “You can’t. You’ll get in trouble,” Scout says.

“I have to. Someone will find my pants. Then dad will really be mad,” Jem says. He goes into the dark night. Scout waits for him. She’s afraid. Then he comes back home. He has his pants. Scout can sleep now. “Thank goodness,” she says to herself.
