Chapter 5

Miss Maudie is a neighbor. She is a nice lady. She takes care of her flowers in the garden in front of her house. She likes Scout and Jem. She makes them cakes. The cakes are very good.

Sometimes Scout hangs out on Miss Maudie’s porch. Miss Maudie also knows about Boo Radley. She tells the kids about him. “Boo is not a monster,” she says. “He is shy. He likes to stay home. He doesn't like to come out. His name is Arthur. His father was not nice.”

“His father said he was religious. But he used the Bible wrong. He used it to hurt Arthur.” The kids listen. Later, they think about it. “I still want to see Boo,” Scout says. “Let’s write him a letter,” Jem says.

They write Boo a letter. They put it on a fishing pole. They try to pass it through the Radley window. Atticus sees them. Busted! Atticus is mad. “You shouldn’t do that. It's not right. Boo needs peace. Leave him alone.” The kids are sad. They really want to see Boo. But they know Atticus is right.
