TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD Chapter 8
Chapter 8
It's winter in Maycomb. It's very cold. This year it snowed. It doesn’t snow very often. Snow is rare in Maycomb. Some say it’s the coldest winter ever.
“The cold is your fault,” Mr. Avery tells Jem and Scout. Mr. Avery is a neighbor. “You’re always running around. You’re always making mischief.” Scout believes Mr. Avery. She thinks the extreme cold might be her fault!
But the kids are excited about the snow. They make a snowman. They use dirt and snow. They make it look like Mr. Avery. He made them feel bad. They laugh at their snowman.
“Jem, Scout, your snowman looks too much like Mr. Avery. Fix it,” Atticus says. They laugh but do what their father says. It's a fun day. They forget about the cold.
But at night, something bad happens. Miss Maudie's house catches fire. Everyone in town comes to help. They try to save her things. Scout watches the fire. She is cold.
She doesn't know it, but someone puts a blanket on her. Later, Atticus points it out. He thinks it was Boo. Scout is surprised.
