#43 Listen Up, Write it Down (Grace Linn "Fear is Control")
CONTEXT:
Grace Linn is 100 years old. She attended a local school board meeting in Florida to protest the state’s book banning policy. The Florida State Governor and the republican state legislature have been enacting draconian book-banning laws that put public school teachers at risk of personal legal liability. Dozens of books, most of them related to subjects touching on LGBTQ issues, sexual discovery, and slavery and black American history, have been deemed unacceptable and harmful to American students, and have been banned from classrooms and public libraries all around the state (and in other republican-led states in the United States of America). Grace has appeared to take a stand against this Orwellian law and defend the freedom of speech and the right to read.

I am Grace Linn. I am 100 years young. I’m here to protest our school’s district book banning policy. My husband was killed in action in World War II. One of the freedoms that the Nazis crushed was the freedom to read the books they banned. They stopped the free press, banned and burned books. Both are done for the same reason: fear of knowledge. Fear is not freedom. Fear is not liberty. Fear is control. My husband died as a father of freedom. I am a mother of liberty. Banned books need to be proudly displayed and protected from school boards like this.
